Mute Swan Family

From 2006, this Mute Swan family is enjoying a swim together. From East Harbor State Park in Ohio.

European Cabbage White Butterfly

Accidentally introduced into Quebec, Canada around 1860, this European species rapidly spread throughout North America. Its spread through Ohio is well documented. It was first reported in the vicinity of Cleveland in 1873, where it was considered common by 1875. This butterfly reached western Ohio and the vicinity of Cincinnati by at least 1875. By 1878 it was regarded as very abundant in Southwestern Ohio. By 1882 this butterfly was already considered a serious economic pest.

Identify this duck

While at the Lincoln Park Zoo, these ducks (ok, may not be ducks) were with the flamingos. Can you identify the name and species? First correct commenter gets all the glory that goes with being first, and correct.

Multi-colored Roses

Emilia and I went to the 22nd Columbus Rose Festival in Whetstone Park. Over 11,000 rose bushes were in bloom of every color imaginable. The formal opening of the Columbus Park of Roses was in June 1953. In January 1954 the American Rose Society Headquarters relocated from Hershey, Pennsylvania to Columbus, staying until 1974 when they moved to Shreveport, Louisiana where they are today. The park is 13 acres and well maintained by several local rose societies.

Chicago Panorama

Looking North from the Shedd Aquarium at the Chicago skyline and marina. This photo was stitched together from 24 separate shots. Still trying to figure out the best way to show the panoramas here, maybe a separate page so that they are larger and easier to view.

Blue Iguana

The Blue Iguana is one of the longest-living species of lizard, up to 70 years, and is a national symbol of the Cayman Islands. The largest native land animal on Grand Cayman with a total nose-to-tail length of 5 feet and weighing as much as 30 pounds. Critically endangered, there is an ongoing recovery program on the Cayman Islands.

Navy Pier Seagull

Emilia and I in Chicago for a few days so that she can take one of her Medical Board exams. We spent some time on Navy Pier after we arrived. It had rained earlier on, but cleared up once we made it to the pier from the hotel. Seagull posing nicely for me.

Caterpillars

Sunning themselves on a limestone rock, these tent caterpillars were in no hurry to move. Pretty sure these are tent caterpillars but somebody out there might be able to identify them more correctly. This was taken on the North Ridge road that overlooks Scioto Trails Park.

Turkey Vulture

Emilia and I went camping in Scioto Trails State Park for the Memorial Day Weekend. Beautiful, quiet campgrounds, another couple we know joined us for Saturday night.

While hiking one of the numerous trails through the state forest, a turkey vulture swooped very close and I was able to snap this shot. They have wingspans up to 72 inches and will eat almost anything. This shot is very similar to the one of the California Condo I took at the Grad Canyon 2 years ago. View that photo here.

Big Run Park

It was a very beautiful day and Emilia and I went for a walk in Big Run Park. This park is not even 1 mile away from us, but we have never been there. It is about 242 acres and is designated as a nature preserve. We walked around for a bit and on the way back saw this moth clinging to a couple blades of grass. He barely moved as I laid on the ground to get a nice shot of him. Not sure what type he is but very pretty.
