Christmas luminaires

Emilia and I again visited German Village for the Holiday Lights. Although the temperature was in the teens (Fahrenheit), it was still a pleasant evening for us, and a good excuse to get out of the house for awhile. We picked out our Christmas tree the day before and decorated it before going to the Village. These lights were on the pathway in Schiller Park, where we got engaged in 2007. The temperature that evening was -19 below zero (Fahrenheit). Here is a <a href=”https://eleventwentysix.com/index.php?showimage=192″ target=”new”>photo</a> taken in 2006 during the Holiday Lights.

Flatiron

I found myself agape, admiring a skyscraper – the prow of the Flatiron Building, to be particular, ploughing up through the traffic of Broadway and Fifth Avenue in the late-afternoon light. – H.G. Wells (1906)

Kangaroo depression

“Just take your photo and leave me alone in my misery.”

He just looks so sad. If I was stuck in a zoo in Chicago, I would be sad too. Actually, they were hopping about like crazy. Just happened to take the photo at the right time.

Stephansdom, Wien, Austria

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is a must see while in Vienna. Every detail of this cathedral must be examined to truly appreciate the complexity of its architecture. From the colorful roof to the carvings on the exterior walls, you can spend an entire day and be mesmerized.

Although we did not have an entire day to spend here, this photo represents the majesty of the cathedral. It is very dark inside and taking pictures without flash is almost impossible. Holding the Nikon tightly on the nave gates and keeping the shutter open for 1/4 of a second without moving required several attempts. One visitor who was using a point and shoot camera was dismayed by his outcomes, and was even further saddened when he saw the results of my photos. I politely told him to take his camera off automatic and try shooting in manual mode. Who knows if he succeeded.

Knox County Poorhouse

The Knox County Poorhouse was constructed between 1875-1877 and was used for 75-years to house the poor, many of whom lived and died on the grounds. The 90,000 square foot, four-story building featured 90 rooms. The Poorhouse closed in 1953 due to structural stability concerns, although it became home to the Mount Vernon Bible College, after repairs were made, in 1957 until 1987. In 1997, the building became home to the House of Nightmares, a haunted house, which operated until 2006 when a section of the interior collapsed. The building is located in Bangs, Ohio on Possum Road.

Mother Goose

A goose only a mother could love. Very strange looking.

Grasshopper

Grasshopper is a term currently used in jest, referencing an inexperienced person who has much to learn. Its use originating from the television show Kung Fu (1972-1975) in which the student, Young Caine, is taking instruction from his Master Po who nicknamed his student “Grasshopper” as a term of endearment.

This grasshopper showed up today for Emilia’s birthday party/cookout. We made a traditional Romanian dish, called mici, a grilled minced-meat made from beef, pork and lamb. The size of a small sausage, mici means ‘little’. Served on a bread roll with mustard and a cold beer.

Busy flower

Busy day for this flower, a butterfly and an incoming bumble bee. Must taste very good to them.

Crabtree Falls

On the way back from Charlotte, NC, we took the Blue Ridge Parkway for it’s beautiful views. Near milepost 339 is a stop to see Crabtree Falls. It is a 2.5 mile loop hike to view the falls, well worth the time. Even if you make the decision to take a shortcut on the trail and end up sliding 15 yards on your back and your camera gets covered in mud <wink>.

Sunset canoe

Canoers at East Fork State Park near Cincinnati over Labor Day weekend.
